Paranormal Entity is a threat to Paranormal Activity. March 21, 2010 P. Jackson (uk) 22 out of 24 found this review helpful
Okay, it's 1.15 in the morning and I have to be up at 5.00 for work, yet here I am on Amazon, writing a rave review. Why? Because, a couple of hours ago, I watched Paranormal Entity, on my own, in the dark... and WOW was it one of the scariest movie experiences I've ever sat through.
Initially I thought Paranormal Entity would be a cheap, uninspired cash-in on the hugely successful recent horror phenomenon, Paranormal Activity, of which I'm a fairly big fan. Watching Paranormal Activity in a packed cinema with your friends is a fantastic ride. People were crying, jumping, screaming, two girls even ran out in shock. Multiply that by a few times, and the result is Paranormal Entity.
I've really been there with horror; it's my genre; my obsession. There are the obvious classics, but sometimes I just enjoy snuggling down with a god-awful one. Paranormal Entity had ALL the signs of a cheap, rubbish horror: Direct to DVD, attempting to clone a successful mainstream movie, unknown actors, bad production values... The list goes on.
...But what is SO amazing and SO surprising about Paranormal Entity is that it really makes you believe that some direct to DVD horror can actually be better than some of stuff that poses and flashes around mainstream cinemas. It's completely popped up out of nowhere and put Paranormal Activity to shame.
The brief plot follows along similar lines. But this time, as opposed to a couple, a family of three have been tormented by a 'negative presence' within their home, so have therefore set up cameras in various places to try and capture whatever is happening at night on film.
For a super-low-budget movie, the acting is fantastic. There's real chemistry on-screen between the three characters, (in contrast to the occasional awkwardness between the couple in Paranormal Activity) which was nice to feel and helps us to believe that we're genuinely watching a family home-movie.
Another thing I admired about Paranormal Entity was that it was just so pumped full with very original and innovative ideas. Obviously presented as 'found footage', there are no credits, but whoever the director is has to be praised for really making something out of nothing at all. The shocks are perfectly timed and some of the one-take shots are assured to have you gasping in awe.
One last mention: The very end of this movie is so utterly frightening and disturbing I'll be surprised if even the most hard-core horror fans don't get nightmares. Paranormal Activity had three endings; this has one, and it's scarier than all three others put together.
In conclusion, anybody who turns their nose up at this, passing it by as a cheap cash-in on Paranormal Activity should be ashamed. Not only does it stand boldly as one of the best in the 'found footage' genre, but ranks as one of the most surprising and scary horror films of the year. I demand you give it a chance.
Paranormal Entity is a real discovery, and will proudly remain in my DVD collection. If only it could've had a shot in cinemas...

Just pure terrifying! April 13, 2010 Mr. A. J. Ralph (Torquay,England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
All I'm going to say is that this makes Paranormal activity look
like an episode olf Tweenies! Not as many effects but believe me
this was pure shokcing.
Like Paranormal activity it's filmed though a normla cameracorder
which gives the movie more pace and realism. It's a mother, son and
daughter whose house is haunted by some unknown presence.
This movie made me and my partner jummp the whole way through
and trust me it takes alot to scare me but watch it alone on a
dark night and you will be troublesome trying to sleep!

If you enjoy good horror films, with a good story and with characters that are well acted you will enjoy Paranormal Activity.
With a huge cast of three people, the film keeps you watching right to the end. It's probably one of the best horror films in recent times as it relies on suspense and things that 'go bump in the night!' Very good for a horror!
"Will turn your blood cold"....? July 10, 2010 I. R. Kerr (Lancashire) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Nice tag line, but although it is better than I was led to believe it would be, the fact is it is largely a Paranormal Activity clone.
It gets a few extra brownie points by lifting the elements of a ghostly Incubus from the under-rated 1982 classic The Entity The Entity [1982] [DVD] along with the TV static images clearly nodding the wink towards Poltergeist. Not forgetting the odd camera angles, nightvision green, slamming doors and footprints (albeit on the ceiling) that we would expect from a movie in the Paranormal Activity genre, expect to be inundated as we were with Blair Witch clones.
The acting is pretty much OK. Director Shane Van Dyke also wrote the script and plays the lead male role of Thomas Finley with Erin Marie Hogan as his sister Samantha.
It's not got the same edge of your seat feeling that Paranormal Activity had the first time I saw it, but with these sort of movies you soon start to second guess events. The ending is ok but over way too briefly considering the build-up it had got. The movie is not at all gory so should appeal to anyone who just wants a few good shocks.
If you get a chance check out another early 1980's gem along the same lines, albeit with a lot more violence, Incubus Incubus (1981) (Ws) [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC], a movie that should have had a far wider circulation.
There are no extras.
