David Beckham Backs Current United Squad

Tuesday 16th February 2010 - 15:46:02

David Beckham believes that the current Manchester United team are as good as the 1999 treble winning side.

Beckham will face his former team in tonight's Champion's League last sixteen clash as part of the A.C. Milan squad.

The former United player is back at the Italian club in a bit to be in Fabio Capello's England  World Cup squad this summer.

Speaking to the BBC he said: "I think they are as talented as the team back then. The Champions League is important to so many clubs. United are always going to be a strong team."

It will be the first time he has faced Manchester United since leaving the club for Real Madrid in 2003. Despite his time away he admits that it's going to be an emotional encounter.

It's going to be emotional but, as a United fan, it's the first time I am going to want them to lose," he stated.

"As an AC Milan player I want to beat United - it is important we win the game and progress to the next stage."

Tonight's opening leg will be played in Italy before Beckham returns to Old Trafford in just over a fortnight for the second match.

United and A.C. Milan are just two of eight clubs in action this week as the Champions League returns.

Lyon will have the home advantage over Real Madrid in their match tonight. Arsenal is the second British team in action this week as they face FC Porto away tomorrow.

The final match of the week sees Bayern Munich face Fiorentina at home.

Chelsea' last sixteen campaign gets underway when they face Inter Milan in Italy.
